HOW
SEXUAL HARASSMENT
AFFECTS
YOUR BOTTOM LINE IN BUSINESS
Trauma associated with sexual harassment affects each
person differently. There are a variety of symptoms and a
wide range of severity. The severity of sexual harassment
is in the eye of the beholder. There are often changes in
employee’s work habits when they have experienced some
stress in their lives. Common changes seen with sexual
harassment are:
Absenteeism
Sick/Leave
|
Employees may be afraid to come into work if they are
being harassed on the job. They may feel embarrassed
or vulnerable or feel as if they can not face another
situation. They may also need to take time off to
receive counseling or other support.
|
Lower Productivity
|
Someone who is being harassed is often worried and
fearful. Attention to daily tasks is often difficult.
They may also stay away from certain tasks to avoid
contact with the harasser.
|
Lower Morale
|
Employees may feel unsupported, fearful or trapped in
the situation. They may not feel sure they would be
believed or have options to report the harassment and
have it stopped.
|
Employee Turnover
|
Employees may feel their only option is to leave.
Facing a situation may be too difficult and even if
management is supportive, there will be some isolation
and “gossip” related to the problem. They may choose
to resign instead.
|
These changes in employee performance along with the
cost of litigation and the impact of sexual harassment has
on other employees and the company’s reputation can be
costly. Taking preventative steps can not only save the
company in the long run but creates a supportive and safe
work environment for employees.
