Our Mission
The mission of Standing Together Against Rape, Inc., (STAR) is to provide the best quality of crisis intervention, education and advocacy services to victims of sexual assault and sexual abuse, and their families and our community.
Our History
Standing Together Against Rape (STAR) has been a presence in Anchorage, Alaska for over 30 years. What started as two women answering phone calls in their basement has evolved into a $1 million, 24-hour crisis intervention agency. Programs and funding have come and gone in the decades that STAR has been in operation, but one service remains consistent. The heart of STAR’s client services is the state-wide crisis line, which is staffed 24 hours a day including weekends and holidays.
Callers can obtain information regarding reporting options, healthcare referrals, support and information on a variety of recovery topics. Most importantly, callers can speak confidentially and anonymously about the violence they have experienced. Both primary and secondary victims call the crisis line as well as medical and other social service professionals. Typically, STAR receives over 1,400 crisis line calls each year.
STAR Philosophy
Sexual assault is a crime of power and control, not a crime of pleasure and passion. Sexual assault is any unwanted sexual contact. Sexual assault does not discriminate; it crosses all gender, race, age and social-economic barriers. Sexual assault is not “caused by” or “brought on by” the victim; it is the sole responsibility of the person who harmed.
